2. Concepts and Features
2.1. Arkeia Smart Backup Architecture and Terminology
2.1.1. How do you specify which data should be backed up with Arkeia Smart Backup?
This is done through the "Backups management" screen, at step 2 of the backup wizard. You specify tree folders selection.
2.1.2. How do I add tapes to a backup object?
Arkeia Smart Backup manages tapes automatically. They are created during the initial backup. Those tapes are used again for following instances of the same backup object (interactive or periodic).
2.1.3. Why does Arkeia refuse a physical tape inserted in the drive?
Usually this happens because it is not a new tape or the tape is allocated to an other backup object. Insert a new tape, or use the correct allocated tape (created in a previous backup instance of the current backup object).

3. Installation, Configuration and Maintenance
3.1. General
3.1.1. Which packages do I need to install?
The server package of Arkeia Smart Backup needs to be installed on a local machine. The JAVA GUI package of Arkeia Smart Backup needs to be installed on any supported platform, with a valid network connection for a remote machine http://www.arkeia.com/download/
3.1.2. How do I enter the Arkeia Smart Backup license key?
Enter licenses in the "Licenses management" screen. For the initial 30 days, no license is required except for plug-in testing.
3.2 Backup
3.2.1. How do I use several tapes with one backup object?
During the creation of the backup object, Arkeia, automatically, creates a "logical tape" that will be used by the backup object. This "logical tape" will be associated with a "physical tape". To be able to use several tapes, just create several "logical tapes" that will be associated with "physical tapes". This can be done through the "Tapes management screen".
3.2.2. Can I force ASB to use whatever tape that is in the drive?
As long as it is a new tape, Arkeia Smart Backup will use it. If it is an Arkeia tape from another backup job, Arkeia Smart Backup will keep asking for a new/different tape.
3.3 Specific Hardware
3.3.1. Why does Arkeia Smart Backup not auto-detect my tape drive or library?
If Arkeia Smart Backup does not automatically detect your tape-drive or library, you need to check "hardware detection" at a system level (dmesg command). Failure to auto detect does not mean the device is not supported. Please, contact us at http://www.arkeia.com/contact/.
