Overview =========== The following versions of Exchange are concerned by this howto: - Exchange 2003 with Service Pack 1 or 2, - Exchange 2007. The Arkeia plugin for Exchange supports backup of entire storage groups, as well as individual databases within the storage groups. This document describes the way to use the the Arkeia Microsoft Exchange plugin and the new Recovery Storage Group feature in Exchange Server 2003 to recover individual Microsoft Exchange emails from a Storage Group or Database backup without having to install and to configure a separate Exchange recovery computer. It explains how to create a Recovery Storage Group, how to restore mailbox data to a Recovery Storage Group, and how to extract recovered mailbox data from the Recovery Storage Group. !!! THIS IS THE ARKEIA SUPPORTED WAY TO RESTORE INDIVIDUAL MICROSOFT !!! !!! EXCHANGE EMAILS. !!! 1. Create a Recovery Storage Group ================================== To create a Recovery Storage Group: 1. Start Exchange System Manager. 2. Expand Administrative Groups (if appropriate), expand AdministrativeGroupName (if appropriate), and then expand Servers. 3. Right-click ServerName, point to New, and then click Recovery Storage Group. 4. In the Name box, type a name for the Recovery Storage Group. 5. In the Transaction log location and in the System path location boxes, specify a location for the transaction log files and for the system path. Make sure that the location that you specify for the transaction log files for the Recovery Storage Group is different from the location that is specified for the transaction log for the original storage group. 6. Click OK. 7. Right-click the Recovery Storage Group that you created, and then click Add Database to Server 8. In the Select database to recover dialog box, click the database that you want to add to the Recovery Storage Group, and then click OK. 9. In the Mailbox Store Properties dialog box, review the properties of the mailbox store, and then click OK. 2. Restore the database with Arkeia to the Recovery Storage Group ================================================================== As explained in the Arkeia V6.0 Microsoft Exchange plugin documentation, use the command-line utility to perform the complete restoration of the database you precedently added to the Recovery Storage Group. (I. step 8). Since this database was added to the Recovery Storage Group in the Exchange System Manager, it will be automatically restored to the Recovery Storage Group and not to its original Storage Group as the plugin does usually. 3. Move Mailbox Data from the Recovery SG to the Original SG ============================================================ Nota: in Exchange 2003, the recover Mailbox Data feature is available only with SP1. 1. Start Exchange System Manager and view the properties of the database that you just restored. In the Database tab of the Mailbox Store Properties dialog box, verify that the "This database can be overwritten by a restore" check box is selected. 2. Mount the database. 3. Select the user mailbox from the store restored into recovery storage group through Exchange System Manager. Right-Click and select "Exchange Tasks" in popup menu to launch the Exchange Task Wizard. Click Next. 4. Select Recover Mailbox Data and click Next. 5. Verify the destination for the data and click Next. 6. Select "Copy Data" and click Next. All data (the entire mailbox hierarchy) will be copied into a folder in the user's mailbox. This folder name is localized and is located in the root of the user's Inbox. The format is: Recovered Data
