The Arkeia team has a long history of innovation in the network backup category.

Version 8 of Arkeia Network Backup Suite delivered backup agents for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V virtualized environments, with solutions for Citrix XenServer, Parallels Server 4 Bare Metal, and Red Hat RHEV. It also delivered our backup server as a virtual appliance available on the VMware vSphere, ESX, and ESXi platforms.

Version 9 of Arkeia Network Backup Suite delivered a next-generation deduplication technology called Progressive Deduplication. Progressive deduplication was invented, patented, and marketed by Kadena Systems as the successor to variable-block dedupe beginning in 2004. Arkeia acquired Kadena in 2009. Progressive dedupe allows mixed-side (source- and target-side), in-line, content-aware deduplication based on a combination of sliding-window and progressive matching technologies.

Version 10 of Arkeia Network Backup Suite delivered capabilities to enable hybrid-cloud backup where backups to a LAN-resident backup server are replicated offsite. Version 10 introduced features for the export and import of backup sets to external USB-connected hard drives and disk arrays. A 10TB disk array transported during a 24-hour period delivers an effective network bandwidth of 1Gbps.

Arkeia Software was acquired by WD, a subsidiary of Western Digital Corp, on December 19, 2012. Arkeia, a WD company, is a part of the small- and medium-business unit of WD Branded Products. The entire Arkeia team joined WD and retains its mission of providing backup solutions for networked environments, with a focus on SMB markets.

Arkeia (pronounced ar-KEY-yuh), beginning in 1996, was the first company to deliver commercial backup solutions for the Linux market.   Our flagship software, Arkeia Network Backup, today protects over 200 platforms including Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Netware, BSD and UNIX systems. We deliver specialized hot-backup agents for over a dozen popular applications (like Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino servers), database management systems (like Oracle and Microsoft SQL), directory servers (like Microsoft Active Directory and eDirectory) and virtual machine environments (like VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V).

According to customer requirements, Arkeia Backup Servers can be deployed as a software application, as a hardware appliance, or as a virtual appliance. However your Arkeia backup server is deployed, all our products mesh seamlessly.  Install Arkeia Backup Agents on client machines and deploy the backup server as a traditional software application. If you migrate your Backup Servers to virtual or physical appliances, you don't need to modify the Backup Agents.

As backup software specialists, we focus on delivering rock-solid backup solutions that deliver all enterprise-class capabilities—without the complexity that would require a team of software administrators to deploy. Unlike other vendors, we have not assembled a patchwork of acquired products. Our technical vision has been driven by a stable, talented engineering team. Arkeia acquired Kadena Systems in 2009 to gain that company's superlative algorithms for next-generation deduplication. We've implemented these algorithms inside the proven Arkeia architecture and they are administered from within Arkeia's web user interface.
